1) In this weeks readings we read about the world becoming increasingly more computerized. It seems really expensive to continuously change the Internet just to make it a few milliseconds faster. Are we really worried about .001 of a cent like the High Frequency Traders?
I am not concerned with the .001 of a cent. I guess the traders are because as times goes by, you’re still making money off of the trade. It’s just a bit slower than the conventional way of buying and trading stocks.
2) One positive to making it faster is that the faster we make the Internet the more we are able to do on it. An example of this was seen in this week’s reading with the advancement in computers allowing the stock market to go digital. For those who are not savvy with trading or even knowledgeable regarding trading with the NYSE; does the computer remove the intimidation of trading with the NYSE?
I am not savvy with trading and honestly, know very little about the stock market. Although I know I will never have an interest in the stock market, if I ever did change my mind, the change to digital would definitely be enticing to me and remove some of the intimidation. I think the intimidation is exactly why I have no interest in the stock market. I also see it as a form of gambling. That could be because I know little about it or because it’s similar to gambling.
3) What about the ramifications of this digital expansion on the average individual? Will the average person still have a place? Will they be left behind by technological advancements?
I think depending on who the “average person” is, they may have to become more technologically savvy to operate the “new” expansion. When I think of the average person in the stock market, I think of the rich people in the fancy suits. For them, I think it would be very easy to move from one expansion to another. Now if you have older folks that are trading, they may get left behind in the transition to digital. Many older people are frightened by every part of the Internet so I highly doubt they would continue trading if it was completely digital.

As I read through the reading this week, one major statement stood out to me that I was surprised I’d never thought of before. When reading through Raging Bulls, it said, “In what some might consider a case of karmic justice, sharks threaten the financial industry by biting its cables, attracted by the electromagnetic fields generated by the wires that power the amplifiers at intervals along their length.” I was shocked that I hadn’t previously thought about  sharks being a huge threat to our underwater cables.

I don’t know about others in this class but I knew very little about the Stock Market and trading in general. After reading Raging Bulls, I feel like I have a better understanding of our trading actually works. Because of movies, I always got the impression that the Stock Market was a place where a bunch of rich men stood in their fancy suits, waiting for the stocks to sky rocket so they could cash in.

I think one of the most important parts of the HFT article that I’m having a hard time understanding is if we transition HFT to a computerized tool, will there still be a Wall Street as we progress? If the Stock Market was moved to the Internet, how would they prevent hackers from getting in? I have no idea how the stock market really works and really no interest in it. I just see it as another form of gambling.

I found this video and it helped me understand the concept of HFT. When we say the words High Frequency Trading it tells me that it’s going to be fast but I think this video shows just how fast it is. It makes me wonder how often traders are missing out on an opportunity.

My Perception of the Internet

As a photographer, at least a quarter of my time is spent on the internet. I tend to find the internet scary but I have not always thought that. Since becoming a photographer, I have witnessed many incidents where images of fully dressed children have been taken from a photographer’s page and posted onto child pornography websites. Since I have begun reading the books, I have changed my beliefs as to what exactly I think the internet is. It also is still very hard to believe that we only have access to 25% of the internet. I know a lot of people think of the internet as a physical place but I do not. When I think of the internet, I think about outer space and shooting stars. Overall, it’s a lot easier for me to think about what the internet is to me than it is to try and describe it.

Like a few others have said, I would love if the posting time was just a bit later. I really hate the discussion board through Blackboard so since we couldn’t come up with an agreement last Monday, I am game for anything except for Blackboard’s discussion board.  Would prefer to either use the blog or Facebook and not Google Docs as I think it would just be too confusing to keep up with.
